The Roman version of a reception was actually a part of their wedding ceremonies. After the wedding contract was signed there would be a huge wedding breakfast feast which was traditionally paid for by the groom and, it has been reported, often lasted until nightfall. This is most likely where the early wedding cake, a simple loaf of wheat flour, salt, and water, was used. At this time gifts were given and the wedding party made ready for the next part of the wedding ceremony - the procession. During this procession the attendants would lead the bride to her new home. This was quite the event. Flute players announced the procession’s progress as they moved. Torchbearers lit the way as designated young children led the way. As they went, and especially as they neared the grooms home, well wishers threw walnuts at the party in a gesture of their hope for the new couple’s fertility. Meanwhile the groom went on ahead to prepare the way house for the arrival of his new wife. The bride’s arrival at the new home was the climax of the wedding ceremony: Before the groom could carry the bride through the doorway of their new home a white cloth was spread on the ground and covered with leaves and branches. Likewise, it is reported that the bride would first smear fat on the door post and tie a strand of wool to the door posts to mark the home as her domain before the groom would carry the bride across the threshold and into their new house. Heres a test for determining a benefits strength: if you cant convincingly answer the question So what? to the benefit, it probably isnt strong enough. Second, it needs to answer a want or need of your target market. If what youre offering isnt something your target wants or needs, whos going to buy it? This statement has a two-pronged approach. You need to identify both a target market and that target markets wants or needs. And, maybe keep in mind that wants are more important than needs. People usually buy from an emotional level first and justify it later. So who exactly is your target market, and what do they want? And the stronger your target markets wants, the easier it is to sell that want to them. Third, you need to provide that want or need better than the competition. To do that, you need to first identify your competition. And then you need to spy on them just a little. But please make it ethical spying. Pick at least three competitors, find out who they are, how similar their product or service is to yours and try to determine their benefits. One of the best ways to find out about your competition is to visit their website. You can often find enough direct and indirect information for a good start in your investigation. No erasing or changing allowed. Relax, take a deep breath, and begin. Think about the job you just had. List all the types of businesses you or your company worked with while you were there. Include customers, vendors, suppliers, buyers, and strategic partners. Go to the second sheet. Make a list of all the skills you gained from your education and employment experiences.
