Surf Fishing The Outer Banks of North Carolina

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By E. A. Edwards My first experience surf fishing was with my father on Wrightsville Beach, NC in the 60s. He parked our shiny black Ford Fairlane in a gravel parking lot off the beach and we hiked over the dunes to the surf, carrying rods, buckets, tackle box and various other fishing paraphernalia. I remember him catching bluefish, croakers, puppy drum and flounder as I played in the tidal pools nearby. Later, my grandmother would fry the filleted fish to a golden brown and we would eat them with hushpuppies and coleslaw. Years later, in the mid-eighties, I remember an early winter fishing expedition near Oregon Inlet, south of Nags Head, this time with my husband, 8-month old daughter and a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy. My husband had come in from duck hunting and had heard the big blues were hitting the beach! We parked our 4-wheel drive truck nearby on the hard sand and with the baby playing contentedly in her car seat and the puppy chewing on anything he could find, we lined up along the surf with a few dozen other fishermen, casting the heavy silver spoon lures into the churning waters of the big blue blitz. Cast after cast we were rewarded with huge bluefish, twelve to sixteen pounds, filling up a wheelbarrow in a pyramid of large fish. Later we filleted, boiled and ate the fish in casseroles made with mashed potatoes. Needless to say, we were eating bluefish casseroles all winter long. Surf fishing is exciting, rewarding and accessible to all. Most locations can be reached either by car or ferry. With a basic understanding of seasons, conditions, equipment and regulations, an angler can get lucky just about any time of the year, but typically the very best times to surf fish are spring and fall. Popular and prolific sport fish species you may catch surf fishing along the North Carolina coast include: Channel bass (red drum, puppy drum) — The spring season generally begins in April. This run will peak by mid May and taper off in early June. Average size in spring is 35 to 50 pounds. In September the smaller drum will enter the surf. These fish will range between 2 and 15 pounds. They are more plentiful than the larger variety and can be found in most sloughs. In late October the bigger drum (40-70 pounds) return and remain until late November. Bait of choice is fresh mullet; rods are 9 to 11 feet with medium to heavy action tips. Size allowed is between 18 and 27 with a daily bag limit of 1 per person. Bluefish — Blues are available in a variety of sizes from April to December to surf fishermen and boaters as well. Large size blues (8-12 pounds) arrive in May and remain until November. Their departure is generally hastened by the arrival of the fall run of 15-20 pound giant blues. These later fall visitors are plentiful and powerful. They’ll take bait (mullet, spot, or menhaden) or almost any type of lure. Fishing rods 9 to 11 feet are preferred. Bag limit of 15 per day per person. Only 5 allowed over 24 total length (from tip of snout to tip of compressed tail). Spanish mackerel — This fish is somewhat of a tourist, arriving in June and staying until later September. The Spanish is delicious, averages 1 to 3 pounds and presents a real challenge to any angler. Spanish mackerel are usually taken on fast moving metal lures. Fishing rod of choice is a 9 foot light action. Minimum size allowed is 12 fork length (from tip of snout to middle of fork in tail). Bag limit of 15 per day per person Striped bass — Recently during the winter months striped bass have returned to NC waters in great numbers. October, November and December are the best times for fishing, with fish still showing up as late as February. In Atlantic waters, size limit is over 27 total length with bag limit of 2 per day. For sounds and other areas, consult the NC Marine Fisheries website. Flounder (summer, southern)– Flounder begin biting in May as the water warms. By June, the fishing is going strong, with both summer and southern flounder being caught. Southern flounder dominate the catch in inshore and southern NC waters, while summer flounder dominate the catch in offshore waters north of Cape Hatteras. Many flounder are caught using cut baits and some are caught using jigs. When jigs are used, they work best when tipped with fish, shrimp or a mullet minnow. Other species available to North Carolina surf fishermen are pompano, croaker, trout, spot, hogfish and whiting (sea mullet). Be advised that there is a proposed recreational saltwater fishing license which is scheduled to take effect January 2006. The license is still being debated by the North Carolina General Assembly and you should check the NC Marine Fisheries website (http://www.ncfisheries.net) to determine if a license is required before fishing the NC coast after that date. Also, the size regulations and limits given above are accurate at the time of this writing (summer 2005) but are subject to change, so check the NC Marine Fisheries website to confirm these regulations before your fishing expedition. Whether beginning angler or old salt, surf fishing is a popular and fun activity with minimal expense, no boat required, easy access to great fishing conditions and plenty of action. With a minimum of effort and expense, you can catch a variety of excellent eating fish, have a great time and start making your own memories. E. A. Finding a Chicago Moving Company to Do Business With

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Ted Garvin Chicago is an amazing place to live, work, and raise a family. For those reasons, you may be thinking about moving to the area. If so, you may want to examine hiring the services of a professional Chicago moving company. If given the opportunity, many individuals and families would prefer to hire the services of a professional, instead of moving themselves. If you are one of those individuals, you will need to find a Chicago moving company to do business with. When it comes to finding a Chicago moving company, you will find that there are a number of different search methods that you could use. Those search methods should include, but not be limited to, using the internet, your local phone book, or recommendations from those that you know. In addition to using one of the above mentioned search methods, you may want to think about using a combination of them. The more searching you do, the more results you will find. If you already live in or around the Chicago area, you may be able to use a Chicago phone book to find a local moving company. If you do have access to a local phone book, you should look in the back of that phone book. In the back of most phone books, you will find a business directory. Under the heading of movers, you should find the contact information for a number of different Chicago moving companies. That contact information should include a phone number. To inquire about their services and fees, you will want to contact that moving company directly. If you do not have access to a Chicago phone book, you can use the internet to find the same results. The internet can be used a number of different ways. Perhaps, the easiest way to find the contact information of a Chicago moving company is to use an online phone book or an online business directory. The listings found in an online phone book or business directory should contain the same information as the listings found in a traditional phone book. In addition to using an online phone book or online business directory, you should also be able to perform a standard internet search. An online search, with the words Chicago moving company, should provide you with number of different results. Those results may very well lead you to the websites of a number of Chicago moving companies. Those websites are likely to offer information on the company in question. The above mentioned ways are the best ways to find a Chicago moving company to do business with; however, they are not the only search methods that you can use. You may also want to think about asking those that you know. If you know of anyone who has moved to or from the Chicago area, that person may be able to connect you with a reliable and trustworthy Chicago moving company. Whether you search for a Chicago moving company by speaking to those that you know or by using your phone book or the internet, you should be able to find a number of different moving companies. To determine which moving company can offer you the best service, at an affordable price, you are advised to directly contact each company for more information. Are You Bored By What You Do?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Adrian Savage Is your working life in the doldrums? Do you feel stuck in a rut? Uncertain about the future? Depressed by what you can see ahead? Still looking for a job that will fully engage your interest? If so, you’re like millions of others who face each working week more with resignation than excitement. It’s not that things are bad. They just aren’t as good as you would like them to be. So would you like to be doing something you truly enjoy? Something that builds on your strengths and really means something to you? Of course you would. It’s easier than you may think. What I’ve been describing is job:life alignment. When you’re out of sorts with your job and your career, it’s because you and the work you do are misaligned. It doesn’t engage your interest fully. It doesn’t play to your main strengths. It doesn’t pay you enough in return for your effort — and I don’t just mean money. Payment comes in many forms and the most important to you may not be financial. What Causes Misalignment? Put briefly, what you’re doing isn’t lined up with the most important values in your life. Values are far more than simple beliefs or personal standards. The word has been hijacked by politicians and preachers and become debased in the process. Values are the source of everything that’s most important in our lives. They’re the inner drivers and fundamental needs that make us who we are. You can’t live without discomfort and frustration if your most cherished values are violated or ignored. Few people can even tolerate such a situation for long. When you hear about people walking away from their job, their friends or their family, that’s the result of an irreconcilable mismatch between their values and the situation they’re in. Now that’s an extreme and most of us don’t have to face such a dramatic situation. But we may find oursevles facing continual small misalignments between what truly matters to us and the way we are currently living our lives. It’s like having a pair of shoes that don’t quite fit, and walking around all day with sore feet as a result. You can do it, but it isn’t how you want to spend your time. Why Tolerate It? The obvious question is why people tolerate things being like this. Why don’t they vote with their feet (sorry!) and move to another job or another employer? For a start, people are generally far more aware of what they don’t much like than what they do, so the feel the need for a change, but don’t know what change to make. They aren’t sure what would be better — or they assume a job they love is just a dream; they’ll never be able to work anywhere that really fits them. Since they don’t know how to set about changing the situation, they stay where they are. Better the devil you know. In time, they tell themselves it’s how life is and convince themselves they have to put up with it. The Way Out But there is a way out — and it doesn’t need a visit to a shrink or a postgraduate degree in psychology. Nor do you have to take up meditation or spend hours on inner searching (unless you want to, of course). All it takes is the willingness to set aside around thirty minutes and follow a few simple steps. The result will be a clear picture of your most important values — a blueprint for what’s going to provide you the greatest satisfaction in your working life and how to go about finding it. And once you know this clearly, practical steps to get your work and your values back into alignment are far, far easier. Let’s be honest. Getting this alignment back into place may take some time and effort. I’m not going to pretend it’s a slam dunk. You may have to make some changes. But you knew that, didn’t you? And you aren’t afraid to change a few things — provided you know the right way to go about it. Is It Worth It? Only you can answer that. Ask yourself whether you’re prepared to spend half an hour doing some simple research on your life, in return for a clear idea of what you need to do to escape from the rut you’re in. Is it worth it to be able to go to work expecting interest, excitement and fun? You see, even if you can’t imagine changing your job, or pointing your life in a new direction, there are still many ways you can make your current situation more aligned with who you really are. Remember, we aren’t talking about extremes. Just the everyday things you can do to improve the quality — and rewards — of your working life. Here’s What To Do Take a piece of paper and write down all the things you most enjoy about your work. What you find most interesting and most exciting. What makes you feel good. Don’t agonize about your choice. Just do it without thinking too much about it. Put this piece of paper aside and take another one. Now write down all the things you dislike most about your working life. The things you put off as long as you can. The activities that put you in a bad mood for the rest of the day. Take the first sheet again and look for links and similaries. Are there items that go together naturally? Find a name for these categories. It might be “having new ideas.” Or “making my own decisions.” Or “having good working relationships.” Don’t try to find a clever name. You’re the only one who will see this activity, so go with whatever categories make sense to you. Now do the same for the second sheet — the one with the things you dislike. Look at the positive and negative categories you’ve assembled. Do any of these go together? Perhaps the negative is the opposite of the positive. What you’re looking for are the fundamental values that give you the most satisfaction from work and wroking life. Go for these whenever you can. And the negatives? Just try to avoid them. That’s it. Nothing complicated or difficult. But it could transform the rest of your life. And do it now. The greatest cause for living a boring life is constantly putting off doing anything about it. Adrian W. Savage writes for people who want help with the daily dilemmas they face at work. Read This Article If You Love Your Family More Than Anything

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Lance Winslow Part of the socialization and evolution of the human species is our unity in small groups, troops, tribes and societies. Human Beings really are not the only animal or species on the planet like this. Chimpanzees one of our closest relatives which has about 98% of our Genome and DNA Code also has tight night families and groups that they care very much about and spend their lives with and support in a group effort. There are many synergies to this fact and most mammals are family oriented and this helps them stay safe and survive and prosper in their environments. If you love your family more than anything else in the whole wide world and would support them no matter what, even trade your life for their safety and well being then you understand this innate characteristic even if you deny where that strong urge and need is coming from. It is also great to know that most species on this Planet feel the same way and are socially engineered and have evolved to work together in family units the same way. We see it in our pets, both in dogs and cats. We also see this in wild animals on the Animal Channel, Mutual of Omaha and Animal Planet. So when you reflect back in your life to what is most important and say; I love my family more than anything you will be speaking from your heart, your mind and your genetics too. What Are Good Foods For Increasing Metabolism?

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Nikola Govorko When speaking of metabolism most of people think about weight loss. Our Metabolism and weight is a kind of a stepping stone in defining our bodies. But theres one big difficulty with this, we often fail to remember that dieting doesn’t mean denying yourself food. Rather the opposite it means controlling food intake and paying attention to what you eat. Most of the modern day weight loss diets are bad for overall body health. Most of them require complete absence of certain food groups (carbohydrates and fats) if you want them to work for you. Likewise majority of these diets works only as long as you stick with their strict regimen, once you stop, you will very likely gain all the weight you lost and probably gain a few pounds extra. The key to increased metabolism lies in actually eating more, not less. But you have to eat smart, drop the junk food and include much more vegetables and fruits in your diet. The good news is that it is much easier to do then most people think. All you have to do is to substitute bad stuff for good and that is it. Example, instead of eating Mars bar eat an apple. That is it, apply the same principle on every one of your meals and you will soon feel the benefits of it. Not only will you lose weight but your general health condition will gain a huge boost. When you eat fruits and vegetables try to eat as many of them as you can raw. It doesnt mean that you have to eat every single vegetable and fruit raw, but if something needs to be cooked - cook it. List of foods that increase metabolism: Vegetables asparagus, aubergine, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Chicory, Cress, Cucumbers, Fennel, Gourd, Leek, Lettuce, Marrow, Peppers, Radish, Spinach, Tomatos, Turnip Fruits Apricots, Blackberries, Blackcurrant, Clementines, Damsons, Grapefruit, Guava, Honeydew Melons, Melon Canteloupe, Oranges, Peaches, Plums, Raspberries, Strawberries, Tangerines Try not to delude yourself by eating for example caned peaches, stuff like that is full of sugar, and it will only harm you. When it comes to vegetables the best thing to do is to steam them. This will preserve most of the minerals and vitamins. Avoid fried (any fried food) and processed food. You do not need to avoid all the fats, for example you can substitute regular oil or whatever fat you use for cooking and use olive oil instead. This way your food will taste great and youll receive numerous olive oil benefits. One other example, use non-stick pans instead of regular old ones and ad the olive oil at the end, when meal is all but done. For your body to work properly you need to maintain balanced diet, do not deny your body essential nutrients. Try to eat at least 3 5 smaller meals per day, use food pyramid as guide for setting up your meals. Eating 3-5 meals per day will significantly increase metabolism, eating just 1 or 2 large meals however slows it down. Your body thinks about meals in this way, if you eat seldom a food crisis is happening and a food must be accumulated and preserved and it is done by lowering your metabolism. For most of us it is hard to eat right all the time but if you want to succeed in your weight loss effort you must try as hard as you can. By combining exercise with diet you will manage to increase your metabolism naturally. Are you asking your self “how to increase my metabolism”? Reinventing Yourself for Multiple Careers

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Mary Carroll In many countries around the globe, people are born into their station in life and hence their professions. It is unnecessary for them to plan a career as they are expected to perform one specific job their entire lives. These cultures do not consider personal growth or the possibility of choosing ones profession. America, on the other hand, was built on self-reinvention, and todays economy demands it. Those born before 1946 are less likely to have changed careers or even worked for more than one employer during their lifetimes. Today, many employees outlive the lifespan of the companies they work for, and the average worker can now expect to have at least three or more careers, with up to six different positions within each of those careers. Hardly a week goes by without hearing of corporate takeovers, mergers and corporate downsizing. As a result, thousands of seasoned employees are facing burnout from increased responsibilities or being laid-off and replaced with younger, lower-paid employees. Many are looking for a different means of earning a livelihood. For the first time in history, employees must learn to manage themselves and take responsibility for their own employment. Even the word career is taking on new meaning, as a new generation of employees is moving in and out of multiple careers during their lifetimes. Keep in mind that a career change is not the same as job advancement within a specific career. Most are either lateral or a step down in income until you gain experience and expertise in your new career. Be prepared to downsize your lifestyle. Think of choosing a new career as an opportunity to bring a fresh outlook and revitalization to your life, as new experiences will stimulate your thought processes. The most importance part of selecting a new career is also the most obvious, . . . deciding on what you want to do. Often this is a natural offshoot of a previous occupation(s). Reinventing yourself often involves a unique merging of your old talents with your new skill set. Begin by making an honest assessment of your skills, interests and experiences and ask yourself: - What would I do if money were no object? - What did I love to do as a child? - What activity do I do so intently that I don’t notice time passing? - What do I feel passionately about? - What do I value the most? - What are my strengths? - What are my transferable skills? - What kind and how much education will I need to make this change? Most people find fulfillment by doing what theyre good at. By evaluating your skills, interests, strengths and desires you will be able to see a connection between what it is that you value and what you excel at. These are the building blocks that you can turn into a new career. While your new career is still in the planning stages, you can gain valuable information by: - Attending professional meetings and informal gatherings. - Networking. - Joining an online career discussion group. - Asking questions. You are likely to need some additional education in order to begin a successful new career, start by improving the skills you already have. Sometimes, learning a few new software programs is simply all it will require. Should you choose to return to college, learning new skills is much easier when you are motivated to begin a new life. Once you have chosen the kind of work you wish to pursue and acquired the necessary education, be sure to edit your resume to reflect your strengths and skills in this area. Dont be surprised if your job search lasts a little longer than usual. Concentrate on companies that are seeking people with your reworked skill set and eventually youll find an employer who will value the knowledge and experience you gained from your previous career(s). It is vital today, more than ever, to remain versatile to stay employed. A successful career will evolve over a lifetime if you are continuously open to new possibilities. You must constantly seek opportunities for self-improvement and professional growth in order to be prepared for your next reinvention. Mary Carroll at the beginning her fourth career. Bad Credit Auto Loans

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Josh_Riverside]Josh Riverside Do you have bad credit? Its not the end of the world. If you look closely enough, many auto loan companies can get you the financing you need, and in the process, help you make your credit rating better. There are bad credit auto loans available for you regardless of your history. Heres a guide to getting one. First, compare interest rates. Some opportunistic companies may take advantage of your bad credit history by imposing ridiculous interest rates and stifling payment terms. Dont let them abuse you. Interest rates of 10 percent are decent anything more is just wrong. Beware! Some companies will charge as much as 20 percent or more. The key to landing a better rate is to shop around. There are plenty of reasonable lending companies out there. Never sign up for the first offer. Take time to shop around and see which company is willing to bend over backwards to get your business. Choose a company with a wide network. The more auto dealerships the car loan company is connected to, the better your chances of getting the best deal. Go with a company that has a nationwide network of car dealers that grant bad credit auto loan programs. If you dont like the deals offered by one dealership, they can easily hook you up with another. You will also have more choices more cars or trucks to choose from. Do not take anything less than excellent customer service. Remember that despite your bad credit, you are still a customer you deserve the best service available for buyers with credit problems. Choose a company that will quickly and respectfully find you a car dealership that would be glad to give you a car loan at reasonable rates. How can you tell if a company has good service? Your first impression can say a lot. When you called or went personally to the company to inquire about bad credit auto loan facility, did they immediately give you everything you need to know? Do they answer your questions satisfactorily? They should be able to make your car buying experience a smooth and positive one, and treat you in the same polite manner they treat their regular good-credit customers. Succeeding In Growing Your Market Share

By Tom Dougherty How much do you want to win? Are you willing to put everything on the table and examine every opportunity for your brand to succeed in market warfare? We all pretend to strive for victory but most companies fall far short of what it takes to actually prevail. Most brands fail to really challenge the market leader because they continue to salute sacred cows or wasteful process. They become enamored with their past successes and cling to the old business model long after it has been rendered obsolete. There are only two flags that should be saluted the flags of brand integrity and of customers needs. Everything else is an obstacle and is in your way. Catch-22There is a fatal flaw in market leadership fear of risk and that same fear is the weighted anchor that holds back the competitors that nips at the leaders dangling heels. This catch-22 should both be avoided and/or exploited. The market leader may have found their success for a myriad of reasons. They may have been in the right place at the right time or possibly the result of visionary leadership. It is even possible that they were just plain lucky. No matter what the reason for their success, few of them recognize clearly and dispassionately the value that keeps them at the top. It is this blurred vision of reality that the astute competitor can exploit. Attachment to their prior success is their Achilles heel and you need to exploit this inherent weakness. The vast majority of market leaders are wedded to the status quo, they avoid risk and change they are, for the most part, aided in this static paradigm by the many competitors who mimic their every move. If, as a challenger brand, your goal is to reduce your risk by copying the market leader you will fully eliminate all risk by so doing. Risk, by definition means an uncertain outcome and copying the market leader is by no means uncertain. You will absolutely fail there is no question about it. Help The Market LeaderWhat does the market leader want to happen? Simply put, the market leader wants to maintain their advantage with minimal change (read: minimal added expense). This means they prefer the status quo. They wish the playing field to remain static. They are fully invested in the accepted rules and more often than not have an investment in expensive infrastructure. Seeing this phenomenon in REAL time is difficult to do, sometimes it helps to look at the past to see it clearly. Two ExamplesRemember Tower Records? They were THE store for music in their heyday. They had the reputation as the worlds finest selection of music and the arrival of their retail stores sent shudders of fear into the Sam Goody(s) of the world. It was hard if not impossible to compete with Tower Records because of vast inventories and a terrific retail model. However, something changed, and Tower Records could not respond because of immense infrastructure and the self-same retail model that was once lauded. The first change was the move from records to CDs. The retail mega-stores failed to keep up and not one of them changed their brand name to reflect that sea change. Tower Records never became Tower CD or even better Tower Entertainment. They wanted the market to remain the same because they were invested in it. Instead of seeing their brand equity as coveted entry into the new space, they fought it, holding onto a failed and failing model. The customer no longer wanted the shopping experience they wanted immediacy and the ability to buy from their own computer browser. Every time you download a song from Apples iTunes or purchase a CD from Amazon.com, remember that Tower Records was once that a towering brand in music proliferation and experience. It was the source for those that loved and purchased music. They had a brand but they squandered it by focusing on the process rather than the purpose or precept that drove their customer to covet what they delivered. Remember Maxwell House and its good to the last drop promise? The market leader for years and arch-rival to P&Gs Folgers brand. An overlooked consumer insight propelled Folgers into first place after years of being a marginal player the realization that scent was a more powerful motivator than taste. Quick, give Mrs. Olsen the boot and usher in the deep resonant sniff and the theme that the best part of waking up was Folgers in your cup. So much for good to the last drop but Folgers only got the message half right. They overlooked precept (what I believe I crave) and concentrated on purpose (I need the smell of coffee). What is Winning Worth?P&G, in typical form believed that price drove the category and worried that the rising price of coffee would doom their business. The rest of the market agreed with the market leader. Enter flaked coffee allowing users to use less coffee and enter the less than integrity filled 12oz one pound cans. They worried that the market would NEVER pay upwards of $3 a pound for great coffee. I wonder what they think now that coffee drinkers line up at Starbucks for the privilege of buying coffee at $13 a pound and spending $4 on a cup? Are we actually buying better taste or an experience? It seems that taste is worth $3 a pound but the inconvenience of making a special trip to the coffee store is worth $10 more.
